Mother Tongue in Cherry Bombe Magazine

"There’s no way to sugar coat my relationship with my mother. It’s complicated.

I never imagined that my first book would be inspired by the cookbook my mother created from my grandmother’s recipes. Carrying on a family legacy or drawing from it was never my intention or ambition. Rather, there were times in my life when the generational divide seemed too large, the cultural gap too wide. Like many daughters, I found my mother’s perspectives outdated, not so #relatable in the context of my daily life. This is a familiar story, but in my family, these stories end up in cookbooks."

The above is an excerpt from an essay titled "Mothering," featured in Cherry Bombe Magazine, Issue No.17: Cooks & Books. Mother Tongue also shares a recipe for veggie oyako-don with the New York-based print magazine.
